As the engine of China’s scientific and technological research, the CAS undertakes the heavy task of high-level scientific research and development of creative and capable new-type technical talents for the country. As the biggest and highest-level academic entity for development of postgraduate education in China, the University of CAS takes the lead in the development of the domestic experimental platform of (super) large-scale high-performance numerical simulation and cloud computation which masters the most active and extensive applications in the world. It also needs to acquire international leadership as part of its long-term development.
As the most important component of domestic postgraduate education, high-performance computing center is essential to the teaching and scientific research environment. For the purpose of student development, the construction of the scientific computing center is thus urgent for the establishment of a basic educational platform. As a matter of fact, the University pales in comparison with the famous global universities. It lags behind even in comparison with its domestic counterparts in this regard. This is a real concern for the University which warrants immediate attention.
Analysis of application features
The postgraduate education of the University of CAS shall be based on various institutes of the CAS and serve them in return. At the initial stage of postgraduate development, it is necessary to actively help them the students expand their academic horizon and encourage them to improve in technological creativity. Providing high-performance computing, GPU computing and cloud computing is one of the main approaches to achieve this goal. Meanwhile, high-performance computing will also become one of the most important methods of future scientific research and one of the basic courses for the development of various disciplines.
Upon completion, the Scientific Computing Center of the University of CAS may also join the High-performance Computing Center of the Network Center of the CAS, the Institute of Processing Engineering of the CAS, the Institute of High Energy Physics of the CAS and various other high-performance computing centers outside Beijing to form the public resources of high-performance computing centers of the CAS and the public resources of high-performance computing to serve the University’s teaching and scientific research.
Inspur Tiansuo TS10000 high-performance computing product is designed as a central computing platform solution. With its super-high-computing capacity, it can satisfy the user’s requirements for high-performance computing and for the different needs for scientific computing posed by various types of applications. Based on a profound understanding of the needs for high-performance computing of various universities, scientific research institutes and large-scale enterprises, Inspur developed and designed Tiansuo TS10000 high-performance server computing cluster according to the user’s requirements for high-performance computing.
In this project, Inspur provides an isomeric HPC system which comprises 3 management nodes, 3 login nodes, 206 computing nodes, 30 GPU nodes and a storage subsystem. The latest Intel SNB platform and E5-267 CPU for the blade server are selected to deliver robust computing capacity for the user. The project also features professional IB storage as the professional storage system for the user so as to fully satisfy the user applications’ requirements on high bandwidth and low delay. In general, the high-speed hard disk is selected to establish 201TB storage space to fully satisfy the user’s needs for storage bandwidth. The system adopts the blade-integrated QDR switch to establish a 40Gb fully-linear no blocking computer network with a delay as low as 1us to fully satisfy the requirement on high speed and low delay of network during HPC computation.
